Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about running pace
What is running pace?
Pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometre (or one mile). For example, 5:30/km means you take 5 minutes and 30 seconds to complete 1 km. It is the most common metric runners use to control effort during training and races.
What is a good pace for beginners?
For new runners, a pace between 7:00 and 9:00 min/km (11:15–14:30 min/mi) is ideal. The key is being able to hold a conversation while running. With consistent training, pace improves naturally over weeks.
How do I calculate my marathon finish time?
Use the "Calculate Time" mode: enter 42.195 km as the distance and your target pace. The calculator shows the finish time and a per-km splits table. For example, a 5:41/km pace gives a finish time of 3:59:59.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Speed is measured in km/h and tells you how many kilometres you cover per hour. Pace is the inverse: minutes per kilometre. A speed of 10 km/h equals a pace of 6:00 min/km.
How do I convert pace from min/km to min/mile?
Multiply your pace in s/km by 1.60934. For example, 5:30/km = 330 s/km × 1.60934 ≈ 531 s/mi = 8:51/mi. This calculator does the conversion automatically and displays both units in the result.
